“For a number of years my interest has been in the evolving interplay between science and the natural world and the changing nature of our relationship to living organisms. Intrigued by the human influence upon the subvisible realm of nature through current biotechnologies, my work is both a reflection on the natural world that lies beyond the visible threshold and an enquiry into the emerging human presence within this space.
Following earlier assemblage work, my images often incorporate photogram techniques and also current innovations within electron microscopy. Recent images made with a Focused Ion Beam microscope, utilise a fine beam of charged atoms to physically alter the surfaces of single-celled marine microorganisms and plant pollen, while the lower technology of the magnified photogram has provided an alternative to normal vision, revealing the strange complexity of nature and its organisms.”
