Sandy Edwards
Sandy Edwards began work as a freelance photographer in 1977, specialising in portraiture and the arts. Her documentary photography focuses on the representation of women and Aboriginal issues. Welcome to Brewarrina (1990) is a personal portrait of the Aboriginal community in the New South Wales town of Brewarrina. Edwards visited Brewarrina several times as one of the twenty photographers who were selected for the After Two Hundred Years project, and has maintained her connection with that community.
In her most well-known series, Paradise is a Place (1996), Edwards explores a young girl’s growth to adulthood in the far north coast of New South Wales. This series was also published as a book, with an accompanying story by Gillian Mears, in 1997. The 2004 retrospective, Indelible, brought together Edwards’ more personal work. Through an emphasis upon portraiture, the photographs in Indelible examined themes of human relationships, aging and trust.
