“In 1998 I made a series of black and white large-format portraits, all photographed at twilight. Photographing at this time of day allowed the sitter to feel comfortable, open and honest while I endeavoured to capture a story behind their faces. Photographing each person within a chosen landscape created a sublime, timeless and theatrical atmosphere.
When making a series of images, my approach is to give the viewer an experience rather than a message. This is most evident in my landscape work, Colour Blind (2001) and Foreboding (2004). I use coloured filters in my landscapes to shift the images from the everyday, and give them a cinematic and painterly quality. This in turn provokes a language of ambiguity, questions regarding the unknown and a platform for the imagination.”
