Martin Smith

Martin Smith’s photographic assemblages examine the personal experience, stories, memories and histories that are embedded in the photograph. Themes of responsibility, regret, acceptance and salvation are explored through the use of narrative devices such as familial text, filmic signifiers and popular music.

The lyrics to popular music such as David Bowie’s “Heroes”, Nirvana’s “Smell like teen spirit” and Johnny Cash’s “I walk the Line” are etched into the image to add another layer of experience. The lyrics like the photograph act as a trigger to remind us when we heard that song, where we were and the legacy of the artists who produced it.
